A decade-long drought and defending champions Manchester City stand between Aston Villa and continuing their 100 per cent home winning record tonight.

Unai Emery's side have smashed 25 goals in six consecutive Premier League victories at Villa Park, on a run which actually extends back to February of last season to include a further seven wins.

City head to the west Midlands on Wednesday night having been held to three league draws in a row, the latest coming in controversial circumstances at home to Tottenham.

However, Pep Guardiola's side have enjoyed their trips to Villa Park in recent times - and are unbeaten against these opponents since Leandro Bacuna and Andreas Weimann were Villa's heroes in a 3-2 win in September 2013.

Aston Villa have won 13 games in a row at Villa Park, and currently sit 4th in the Premier League table. It’s a truly incredible turnout under Unai Emery, even more so when you consider the team flirted with relegation in the early stages of last season under former manager Steven Gerrard. While Aston Villa’s away form has been a little patchy, they look practically unbeatable at home, but that label will be firmly tested by the visit of Man City.

It’s rare to say that Man City are in relatively poor form by their own lofty standards, but Pep Guardiola’s men have now gone three EPL games without a victory. A run of draws against Chelsa, Liverpool and Tottenham is not a disaster considering the quality of opponents faced, but it has seen the reigning champions drop down to third place. As noted, Villa Park is a very tough place to visit, and Man City will have to do so without two key players: Jack Grealish and Rodri, as both are suspended. The latter missed three games earlier this season and during that period Man City failed to win a single game, which could be an ominous sign.

Ollie Watkins was fit to start and score a late equaliser for Villa at Bournemouth on the weekend, after a knock. The hosts will be without Bertrand Traore, Emi Buendia and Tyrone Mings due to injury. Boubacar Kamara is back from a ban.

Jack Grealish is suspended for this homecoming, as is Rodri for City. Mateo Kovacic should step into the midfield while Matheus Nunes and Kevin De Bruyne are unavailable.

Ollie Watkins has been in great touch scoring eight goals including a 90th minute equaliser against Bournemouth last time out to rescue a point for the midlands club. Should Villa manage to take points of City, it would cement their credentials as top four contenders and even put them right in the middle of a title race.

However, Pep Guardiola’s men are ticking. A 3-3 draw against Tottenham, their third stalemate in a row, means that City fell three points behind Arsenal in the table before these midweek fixtures. A controversial refereeing decision during that match also angered Erling Haaland who will be looking to unleash his fury on City next’s opponents.

Aston Villa are without injured trio Bertrand Traore, Emiliano Buendia and Tyrone Mings but Boubacar Kamara is available to return after serving a one-match ban last weekend.

Rodri and Jack Grealish have collected too many yellow cards and are both ruled out through suspension while Matheus Nunes has missed the last three games with a muscle problem and will be assessed. Kevin De Bruyne remains out with a long-term hamstring injury but John Stones could return pending a fitness check.

A 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday saw the Sky Blues' winless run in the Premier League extend to three games, their longest since 2017. As a result, they relinquished top spot to Arsenal, and Pep Guardiola will be scratching his head as to how he can stifle Aston Villa's unwavering momentum at Villa Park.

A late equaliser against Bournemouth over the weekend was enough to salvage a point from a tricky road trip for the Lions, who remain in the top-four. In red-hot form on home soil, Villa have won 13 league games in a row at Villa Park and will look to pounce on City's defensive vulnerabilities in recent outings this midweek.

The reigning champions have dropped points in each of their last three games with three draws, during which they have scored eight goals and shipped eight - much to the frustration of Pep Guardiola and his merry men.

Erling Haaland remains a lethal weapon up front with 14 goals in as many Premier League matches this season, but his side must tighten up at the back if they are to cause issues for Arsenal and Liverpool at the summit.

Unai Emery won't be afraid of the big games when they roll around, and will challenge the likes of Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby to test their mettle on the grand stage against an elite unit.

Jack Grealish will miss out on a trip to his former club after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Spurs at the weekend, as is Rodri for Man City. Mateo Kovacic came off the bench for a late cameo on Sunday, and should step into the midfield in the absence of Matheus Nunes and Kevin De Bruyne.

They face a Villa side that was also left frustrated at the weekend after being held to a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Villa remain in the top four following that result, but with their superb home form this term, they'll be confident of pulling off a statement win against a City side that has been uncharacteristically conceding goals.
